A hard-throwing left-hander from Texas, Scott Kazmir was a prized prospect in the Mets organization, selected in the first round of the 2002 amateur draft. When the Mets needed immediate pitching help, they dealt Kazmir to the Devil Rays just before the July trade deadline in 2004. Within three weeks, the soutpaw was in the big league rotation for Tampa Bay. As a 21-year old, Kazmir won 10 games and was the Devil Rays ace in '05, and seemed set to establish himself as one of the game's best young pitchers in 2006.
